Sanitary Pad Safety: What Women Need to Know to Prevent Infections

Sanitary pads are a safe, convenient option for menstrual care when used correctly—but improper use can increase the risk of bacterial overgrowth, skin irritation, and even rare but serious infections like toxic shock syndrome (TSS) or vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection).
Here’s what every woman should know to stay healthy, comfortable, and confident during her period.

1. Change Pads Every 4–6 Hours (Even If Light Flow)

  • Why: Blood is a breeding ground for bacteria. Leaving a pad on too long raises pH, disrupts vaginal flora, and irritates skin.
  • Tip: Set a phone reminder if needed—especially on light days when you might forget.

2. Choose Unscented, Breathable Pads

  • Avoid: “Fragrance,” “odor control,” or “deodorant” pads—they contain chemicals that disrupt natural vaginal pH and cause allergic reactions.
  • Look for:
    • Cotton-top or organic cotton pads
    • Pads with breathable backing (not plastic-heavy)
    • Hypoallergenic labels
🌿 Note: “Natural” doesn’t always mean safer—but fragrance-free does reduce risk.

3. Wash Hands Before & After Changing

  • Bacteria from hands (like E. coli) can transfer to the vulva, leading to UTIs or skin infections.
  • Use soap and water—don’t rely on hand sanitizer alone (it doesn’t remove all pathogens).

4. Never Reuse Disposable Pads

  • Even if it looks clean, microscopic bacteria remain. Reusing = high infection risk.
  • For eco-friendly options, choose certified reusable cloth pads—and wash them properly (hot water + thorough drying).

5. Avoid Overnight Pads During the Day
